View RecordsFind the Charlotte-area clerk route for a criminal background check, choose certified county or statewide self-review scope, and avoid the wrong city office.
A Charlotte background check can refer to different products. A Mecklenburg County court search, a North Carolina SBI personal review, an authorized employer or licensing check, and a personal FBI Identity History Summary are separate routes. Charlotte City Clerk directs background-check inquiries to the Mecklenburg County Clerk. The Mecklenburg Clerk contact number is 704-686-0400. The courthouse is 832 East Fourth Street, Charlotte, NC 28202, and the mail address is PO Box 37971, Charlotte, NC 28237-7971. Confirm the record scope and recipient before requesting a result.
The North Carolina Judicial Branch certified criminal record search uses form AOC-CR-314. It is a single-county search for yourself or another person, costs $25, and requires the county, known names or aliases, criminal or infraction selection, and requester information including address and signature. Mail requests use money order or certified check, not personal checks. In-person payment options include card, cash, money order, or certified check. The county search has limitations including same-name matches, juvenile or restricted records, and no-match results. A no-match result does not establish that no record exists. A same-name result should be checked against the available case details for the person searched rather than assumed to identify that person. Background-check users should use the county clerk route rather than relying on the Portal as the background-check route. The Portal provides case information and is not a certified screening product.
The free courthouse terminal search is different from the certified screening product. Public courthouse computers provide free noncertified county and statewide search/view access, including search, viewing, and email access options. Printing may cost extra. The same Clerk provides the $25 certified county product. The Portal provides case information and is not a certified background-check product.
SBI Right to Review uses the original request form and a legible ten-print FD-258 fingerprint card. The packet uses identifying information such as name, address, date of birth, race, sex, and optional SSN. The fee is $14 by certified check or money order to NC SBI. Requests are sent by US Mail only to NC SBI, CIIS, Applicant Unit—Right to Review, 3320 Garner Rd, Raleigh, NC 27610.
The mailed SBI-letterhead result goes to the subject. It covers NC fingerprint-supported arrests and dispositions and is not a county certification or an other-state/national record search.
Employer and licensing screening uses authorized agency processes. Statutory authority and an Access Agreement are required; this route is not available to any requester merely through consent. After fingerprinting, applicants return both required agency forms to the employer or authorized entity rather than mailing them to SBI. This differs from personal Right to Review.
Mecklenburg Sheriff fingerprint collection has its own office requirements: 700 E. Fourth St Suite 120, 704-336-3665, valid state ID, required cards/agency forms, FD-258 availability, and $10 for up to five cards plus a separate card convenience fee. MCSO fingerprint information has a walk-in versus appointment presentation conflict, so confirm current collection instructions before going. The FBI Identity History Summary is a separate personal product with an $18 fee and is not an employment or licensing substitute.
SBI CIIS help is available through [email protected] and 919-582-8660. Results are mailed. Official timing statements include approximately 7 business days and up to 20 business days from receipt depending on the source guidance; these are estimates, not guarantees. Check current processing status through the SBI Background Checks processing destination because mailed results and processing conditions can vary. There is no same-day expedite.
SBI result corrections use the Right to Review Criminal History Record Written Exception Form route. SBI correction requests use the Right to Review Criminal History Record Written Exception Form route sent to NCSBI–CIIS, Attn: NICS/CCH Unit Supervisor, 3320 Garner Road, PO Box 29500, Raleigh, NC 27626-0500. This is distinct from the personal-review application address. Court record errors go to the responsible clerk, while licensing status questions go to the requesting agency.
